Secret Operation Carlotta (Original Title: The Bribe ) is a US-produced film noir from 1948 with Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner in the lead roles.

action

Investigator Rigby is sent by the US government to Los Trancos on the fictional Caribbean island of Carlotta to stop the smuggling of surplus war material. There he falls in love with the bar singer Elizabeth Hilton, the wife of the suspect Tug Hilton. Carwood, the head of the smuggling ring, tries unsuccessfully to kill Rigby; on the other hand, Bealer succeeds in playing Rigby and Elizabeth off against each other. Rigby can pose Carwood during fireworks.

background

The scenes during the fireworks were reused in the film Dead in No Checks , as well as a sequence with Charles Laughton at a bar.

Reviews

“The character study of Charles Laughton as a sleazy spy and blackmailer acting on behalf of the gang leader is remarkable. An effectively staged agent film that inspired Carl Reiner for his 'Black Series' satirical Tote wear no plaids . "

"Considerable achievements of the actors and the camera in a story that is not always valid, however, which plays a bit with murder and adultery as pure entertainment moments."
