Roy Rowland
Roy Rowland (born December 30, 1902 in New York , USA , † June 29, 1995 , Laguna Hills , Orange County , California ) was an American film director .
Life
Rowland had studied law for a few semesters before finding a job in film in the script department in the early 1930s. In 1931/32 he assisted the director WS van Dyke on Tarzan, the Ape Man and in 1934 shot several scenes of Richard Boleslawski's and Allan Dwan's The Lions of Hollywood (Hollywood Party) without naming his name . From 1936 on, Rowland worked as a short film director for the MGM (including the Crime Does Not Pay and Pete Smith series) and for the army.
In 1943 Roy Rowland made his debut as a director of feature-length films. His productions were routine entertainment without artistic ambitions. He shot musical romances and westerns , crime films and comedies with slapstick elements, soulful melodramas and musicals . His most interesting and unusual production was the horror fantasy Die 5000 Fingers des Dr. T. Since the late 1950s, Roy Rowland worked primarily in European (Spanish, Italian and British) studios. His last sole production was Eurowestern, filmed in Spain in 1964. They called him Gringo with Götz George , Alexandra Stewart and Helmut Schmid in the lead roles.
In the mid-1960s he took part in the US versions of two pirate films, Under the Flag of the Tiger (El tigre de los siete magres) and Thunder over the Indian Ocean (Tormenta sobre el Pacifico), with Gérard Barray in the main role. Rowland retired into private life after managing production for Fahr zum Hölle, Gringo .
