content

The action takes place at the time of the war between France and England - around the year 1795. The corsair Robert Surcouf is commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to rob and destroy important documents about French military bases on the island of Saint Malo, which has been conquered by the English. The action succeeds, but annoys the commanding commandant of the island so sensitively that he decides to put a price on the corsair's head. But instead of him, Surcouf's brother Nicolas is caught, which in turn forces the corsairs to return to the island. After some back and forth, Robert Surcouf finally manages to save both his own head and that of his brother, for whom the gallows was already ready.

Reviews

The Protestant film observer has a mostly positive opinion: “The film is divided into two parts, each of which is served fresh and lively. Only the transition, when Robert Surcouf hands over the ship to his brother after completing his order, does not want to convince, because he comes unprepared for the viewer and does not seem motivated enough afterwards, as the construction of the story is the weakest part of the film . But you can accept that, especially since the director worked briskly and refrained from the obligatory cruelties. ”The lexicon of international film judges less benevolently :“ Again a pirate film in an adventurous operetta-like production. ”
