Gérard Tichy (born March 11, 1920 in Weißenfels , † April 11, 1992 in Madrid ; actually Gerhard Johannes Alexander Tichy Wondzinski ) was a German actor . He has appeared in numerous Spanish and Spanish films, including El Cid (1961) and Doctor Schiwago (1965).

Life

Tichy was the son of a doctor. After a short period as an artist, he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then took part in the Polish and French campaigns as an infantry soldier . After serving on the Eastern Front , he saw the end of the war as a lieutenant in Alsace .

He fled the prisoner of war camp in Bordeaux , where he spent a year and a half, on Christmas Eve 1946, but was arrested soon after and taken to another camp. A few hours later he fled again and reached the southern French town of Dax , where he hid for a while in a cinema until he finally got on the express train to the border town of Hendaye . Since the border was closed, he tried to wade through the Bidasoa to get to Spain. There he was immediately arrested by the Spanish police, but after three months there were Germans living in Spain who vouched for him and obtained his release. He moved first to San Sebastián , then to Madrid, where he worked as a waiter.

Through the mediation of the cameraman Hans Scheib (* 1905) he got to the director César Fernández Ardavín , who was looking for an actor for a German submarine commander for his film Neutralidad (1949) . From then on, Tichy worked intensively on his film career and took part in five other films the following year. Despite a lack of acting training, he was soon given some significant roles. He played both villains and positive characters and has been featured widely in international films with Spanish locations since the 1960s.

He returned to Germany repeatedly, where he not only took part in the Zarah Leander film Cuba Cabana and the television operetta version Giuditta - Friends of Life is Worth Living , but also appeared in the theater, for example at the Hamburg Kammerspiele in 1959 .
