content

The main location of the film is the Île de France in the Indian Ocean (better known today as Mauritius , the main island of the state of the same name, which belonged to France until 1810). And that is where the young lieutenant Robert Surcouf from Saint-Malo was transferred during the Napoleonic period because he was not good enough as a son-in-law to a rich shipyard owner. In the Indian Ocean , however, Surcouf achieved fame and honor when he broke the British blockade and brought food for the starving crew. However, he also captured English ships against express orders, for which Surcouf's crew is now to receive no shares. So he had to go back to France, where, thanks to the intercession of Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, he was provided with proper letters of piracy. But now he is really becoming a naval hero. His rival in the struggle for the hand of the beautiful Marie-Cathérine Blaise has meanwhile made sure that the girl will only be awarded to him if the ruin of the shipyard that is threatened by the government contracts withheld is absorbed. So Surcouf returns home in a hurry and wins the race for the bride.

Reviews

The Protestant film observer is full of praise: “The French naval hero Surcouf is supposed to be a historical figure, but it depends more on the historicity of the circumstances of the time described, which are essentially correct. And against this background of the time, a lively staged adventure takes place with a very likeable hero who also captivates with beautiful shots - especially lake pictures - from the camera. From the age of 12 you can enjoy it. ”The lexicon of international films does not judge so positively :“ Adventure film with a lot of fights, the clink of swords and a good deal of sentimentality. ”
