Auf Messers Schneide (Original title: The Razor's Edge ) is an American film drama by Edmund Goulding from 1946. It is based on the novel of the same name by William Somerset Maugham . In 1984 a remake was made under the same title .

action

Shattered by the experience of the First World War, the American Larry Darrell breaks his engagement to go on a journey and look for answers. Eventually he arrives in India, where he finds himself. His former fiancée Isabel has now married another man, but she still loves Larry. When Larry begins a relationship with a childhood friend on his return and wants to marry her, Isabel thwarts this. The character of the writer W. Somerset Maugham reports as an observer of these turmoil relationships.

Anne Baxter received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Larry's new love . Clifton Webb was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as urbane Uncle Elliott . The film was also nominated for Best Picture and the production designers and decorators Nathan Juran , Richard Day , Thomas Little and Paul S. Fox were nominated for Best Production Design.
