After a small extra role in the silent film The Girl with the Green Eyes from 1916, and another small role in The Royal Family of Broadway - produced in 1930 - she only appeared again in 1934 in The Inventors . Her best-known film was Watch on the Rhine , for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards in 1944 . Watson had already played her role in 378 performances of the play of the same name by Lillian Hellman on Broadway in 1941 . Lillian Hellman's play won the New York Drama Critics's Circle Award . Watson's other film appearances include the wise mother of Norma Shearer in the classic comedy Die Frauen (1939) and the nasty Aunt March in the literary film adaptation of Kleine brave Jo (1949) based on the novel Little Women
