Mr. X on astray (Original title: Footsteps in the Dark ) is an American crime comedy directed by Lloyd Bacon from 1941. It is an adaptation of the play Blondie White by Ladislaus Fodor , Bernard Merivale and Jeffrey Dell.
action
Francis Warren is a well respected financial advisor. He successfully writes detective stories under the pseudonym FX Pettijohn. Only his chauffeur and his friend, the police inspector Mason, know of this secret double life. On a radio review, Mason tears up Warren's latest book, Mr. X going astray ”, which annoys him. When a man is found dead who had presented himself to the financial advisor the day before as a jeweler and a potential major investor, Warren wants to prove to the police inspector that he is the better investigator. Unlike Warren, the inspector doesn't believe in murder. Warren approaches the revue girl Blondie White in the role of a Texan oil baron, whom he believes to be the main suspect. However, she has an alibi: At the time of the crime, she was at the dentist Dr. Davis, who also confirms this.
Meanwhile, Warren's suspicious wife Rita becomes suspicious and, incited by her mother, hires a private detective. When he sees how Warren meets with Blondie, he believes in a relationship between the two. Then Warren gets a locker key from Blondie. A little later he finds stolen jewels in it. At the same moment she is murdered. Inspector Mason now suspects not only Warren of the murder, but also his wife Rita, who wanted to visit her supposed rival at the time of the murder and was seen at the scene.
Warren returns home in a hurry and tries to persuade Rita to leave so that she doesn't get arrested. When the police show up, he escapes and goes to the dentist, whom he has now recognized as Blondie's accomplice. There he pretends to have a tooth pulled and secretly exchanges the poison for water, which the doctor wants to inject instead of the anesthetic. When the police arrive shortly afterwards at the dentist, Warren is arrested. A short time later, however, the dentist can be convicted based on Warren's statement.
