Frawley's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Born and raised in Burlington , Iowa, William Frawley was on stage as a child. He sang in the choir of St. Paul's Catholic Church and performed on the stage of the Burlington Opera House . His first permanent job, however, was outside of show business as a stenographer for the Union Pacific Railroad . Together with his brother he also performed vaudeville numbers and together with the pianist Franz Rath the brothers developed a stage program that took them to San Francisco in 1910 .

There William Frawley met Edna Louise Broedt and married her in 1914. Together the couple went on tour with the comedy show Frawley and Louise . After divorcing Edna Broedt in 1927, the actor spent time in New York and played on Broadway before moving to Hollywood in 1932 . There he was signed by Paramount and played supporting roles in over 100 films in the following years.

In the early 1950s he was hired to replace Gale Gordon by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz for their new television series. In the role of Fred Mertz , he played Ball and Arnaz's landlord and Vivian Vance's husband . Although the actor and his wife from the series hated each other behind the camera, the series was a great success, so the two had to come to terms.

William Frawley died of a heart attack shortly after his 79th birthday. He was buried in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery .
