Gale Gordon (born February 20, 1906 in New York City , New York - † June 30, 1995 in Escondido , California ), actually Charles T. Aldrich Jr , was an American actor .

Life

For the son of actress Gloria Gordon and vaudeville artist Charles Aldrich , entry into show business was an obvious choice. First he worked for radio , the most popular mass medium in the 1930s . He was a regular speaker on Fibber McGee and Molly and The Great Gildersleeve . Gordon was the first speaker for the title character in the radio play series Flash Gordon in 1935 . He later played his role in the radio show Our Miss Brooks in the television version produced in 1952. During his work as a radio announcer , Gale Gordon met Lucille Ball , with whom he often worked together in the following years and was also private friends. Gordon was originally supposed to play the role of Fred Mertz in Ball's sitcom I Love Lucy , but his involvement in the series Our Miss Brooks forced him to give the role to his colleague William Frawley . He did, however, have two guest appearances on the series as Mr. Littlefield, the manager of Desi Arnaz 'character Ricky. Another opportunity to play ball with Lucille came in 1963 in The Lucy Show , where he played the bank manager Theodore J. Mooney and later employer of the leading actress. Gordon and Ball were in front of the camera again in the series Here's Lucy after the Lucy Show .

Gale Gordon was married to Virginia Curley from 1937 until her death on May 3, 1995. He succumbed to cancer just a few weeks later.
