action

Katie Robbins works for a Manhattan publishing house . While on vacation in Palm Beach , she saves a millionaire from drowning. The grateful millionaire becomes intrusive and Katie flees from him. Dressed only in a towel and her earrings, she suddenly ends up in a hotel room where a dead man is lying. When she escapes from this room, the hotel detective watches her. The dead man is Katie's boss, of all people, who fell asleep gently with a smile on his face. As a result, Katie is suspected of having had an affair with the man and that she is now going to blackmail the publishing house. On the run from the detective, she loses one of her earrings and is identified as an employee of the publishing house by the new publishing director Tony Ryder. Tony Ryder is a laid-back playboy who takes over the business as the nephew of the late owner. The publisher is in financial difficulties and fears that it will not be able to obtain the necessary credit for the future of the company due to a scandal surrounding the dead owner. When Tony realizes that Katie is the possible blackmailer, he tries to stop her from blackmailing with a raise. He also tries to set her up with the vet Warren Kingsley Jr. However, this fails. Now he's trying to get Katie himself. He invites her to his apartment for an evening. There he makes her drunk and flirts with her. However, when he expresses his suspicions about the extortion, Katie becomes enraged and leaves him. Tony realizes that Katie is innocent and that he himself fell in love with her.

Reviews

"Somewhat flat, but spirited society comedy by Shirley MacLaine."

“A millionaire marries his little clerk. This old comedy theme has been processed with the usual intricacies into an acceptable American entertainment film. "

- Protestant film observer (Munich, review No. 623/1961)
