Jack Weston (born August 21, 1924 in Cleveland , Ohio , † May 3, 1996 in New York ) was an American actor .

Life

Jack Weston, who worked in an amateur theater as a child, worked as a teenager in the theater as an usher and small actor. After his military service in World War II , he completed an acting training. After stage and television engagements, he also appeared in movies from 1957. Weston remained closely connected to the theater in his later career. His most successful stage productions with his participation include the musical Bells Are Ringing (1956) with Judy Holliday and Neil Simon's comedy California Suite (1976), which was later filmed with Walter Matthau in Weston's role . In 1981 he was for his performance in Woody Allen's comedy The Floating Light Bulb for the Tony Award nominated.

Typical for the overweight character actor were roles as petty crook, questionable detective or dubious businessman. Often these greasy roles turned out to be rather comical, as in The Cactus Blossom at the side of Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman , but sometimes also very dark, as in Audrey Hepburn's character of terrorizing blind man in the thriller Wait until it's dark . For his portrayal of a businessman hiding from gangsters in a gay sauna in the comedy The Murderer Lurks in the Sauna , he received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Comedy or Musical . He had one of his most famous roles in 1987 as the grouchy hotel owner Kellerman in the classic film Dirty Dancing . A year later he made his last film appearance in comedy number 5 does not give up .

His brother was the director and actor Anthony Spinelli , who sometimes appeared under the pseudonym Sam Weston . In his first marriage Weston married his colleague Marge Redmond (1924-2020), with whom he occasionally stood in front of the camera. The two were married for at least 30 years before the marriage ended in divorce. In his second marriage he was married to Laurie Davis Gilkes until his death. Jack Weston died in 1996 at the age of 71 of malignant lymphoma that he had suffered from for six years.
