action

The action takes place in Cuba in 1958 . The retired British Major Robert Dapes is entrusted by the Fulgencio Batistas government to organize the fight against the insurgents. He works with Captain Raphael Ramirez, who thinks Dapes is too late.

Dapes meets Alexandra Lopez de Pulido, who is married to a heir to a cigar factory and with whom he had a love affair years earlier. Her husband is cheating on her. Alexandra, who runs the company's business, dismisses her husband's lover. The wife's brother wants to kill Alexandra's husband in revenge and carries out an unsuccessful attack in a restaurant. He is later tasked with killing Dapes as a member of the insurgent organization - an order that is withdrawn when the insurgents gain the upper hand.

In the end, the units commanded by Fidel Castro win the battle and occupy the capital. Dapes suggests to Alexandra that she leave Cuba with him, but she says that she has nowhere else to live. Dapes flies alone.

Reviews

Vincent Canby wrote in the New York Times on December 21, 1979 that the director and screenwriter relied heavily on chance to bring the characters together. The viewer gets the impression that Cuba is smaller than Nantucket . Numerous dialogues would sound absurd even in a soap opera . Some scenes are cranky and captivating - including the one in which the dictator watches a Dracula film on television . Connery dominates situations in an elegant way, the supporting actors are "excellent" .

Cinema magazine described the film as an "adventure and love story à la" Casablanca "" . He was "a cynical comment on the myth of the revolution and the dirty deal with politics" .

The lexicon of international films wrote that the “comedy specialist Lester” had staged “a remarkably thoughtful and political film” that was “pleasant” because of its differentiated treatment of the subject .
