action

Paris in the 17th century : King Louis XIII. has lost almost all of his power to Cardinal Richelieu because he does not recognize the dangers that lurk around him. His wife Anna of Austria doesn't love him, but is loyal to him nonetheless and wants to support the regent in all possible ways. Both can only hope for the support of a few friends and the Musketeers , a guard of loyal men to whom the young, daring provincial D'Artagnan joins.

When D'Artagnan travels to Paris, he has an unpleasant encounter with Rochefort, a close confidante of the cardinal and leader of his guard. Hardly having arrived in Paris, he first has to face the battle with the three musketeers Porthos, Athos and Aramis, although their arch enemy, the Cardinal's Guard, gets in their way. In this battle, D'Artagnan takes the side of the musketeers and fights their opponents with them. This is how the close friendship with the musketeers began. D'Artagnan also falls in love with his host's young wife, Constance Bonacieux, who serves the queen as a tailor and closest confidante.

All of France except the king knows that Cardinal Richelieu has long wanted to overthrow the monarch. In order to finally achieve his goal, he wants to take advantage of the Queen's secret liaison with the English Duke of Buckingham. When he learns that the Queen has given the Duke a valuable twelve-piece necklace , which was a gift from the King, as pledge on her last secret rendezvous , he develops a clever plan. For the next ball, which is to take place in two weeks, the cardinal suggests that the king let his wife show him the necklace; if she did not show it in full, it would spark a scandal that would throw the queen out of favor. At the same time, Richelieu instructs his agent Lady de Winter to steal two diamonds from the Duke's necklace.

When D'Artagnan learns of the matter from Constance, he declares himself ready to rush to England and get the necklace back. His musketeer friends and his servant Planchet travel with him, but Richelieu and Rochefort have already got wind of the plan and have arranged several ambushes, to which Athos, Porthos and Aramis fall victim. Despite all this, D'Artagnan made it to England, and with the help of the duke, the missing stones could quickly be replaced.

D'Artagnan returns to the castle at the beginning of the ball and manages to get to the queen's window. But when he wants to give the necklace to Constance, De Winter and the cardinal guards try to prevent this. Only with the sudden reappearance of Athos, Porthos and Aramis is D'Artagnan able to literally fulfill his assignment at the last second. In recognition of his services, he is then accepted into the ranks of the musketeers, but has not only found a lover and new friends but also new enemies who are now seeking revenge ...

Reviews

"Dumas' well-known adventure novel in a splendid and artistically witty remake as an exposure of history kitsch and misunderstood heroism."

“Noble warriors fight in colorful costumes: The umpteenth film version of the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas turns out to be an entertaining, brightly colored costume adventure with everything that goes with it: tension, fat and slapstick. This time, 'Beatles' director Richard Lester (' Yeah Yeah Yeah ', ' Hi-Hi-Hilfe! ') Was responsible for the staging with a top cast. In 1974 Lester also shot the sequel ' The Four Musketeers - The Revenge of My Lady ' , which is not to be taken very seriously . "
