Raquel Welch (* 5. September 1940 in Chicago , Illinois , as Jo Raquel Tejada ) is an American actress .

Childhood and youth

The daughter of a Bolivian engineer grew up in California . After graduating from high school, she took ballet lessons. In 1954 she won a beauty contest.

Professional background

She first became a model and took acting classes at San Diego State College . Welch was discovered in 1963 by press agent Patrick Curtis. He founded Curtwell Enterprises with her. The agent took over her marketing and got her a film contract with 20th Century Fox . In 1964 she got her first small role in the music film King of Hot Rhythms with Elvis Presley . Soon after, Welch gained worldwide popularity through the film A Million Years Before Our Time , in which she acted in a skimpy fur bikini.

Raquel Welch was one of the great sex symbols of European and US cinema in the 1960s and 1970s . In the late 1970s, she temporarily withdrew from the film business. In 1978 she made a US television appearance on the popular The Muppet Show . In 1979 she was featured in Playboy . In the 1980s, Welch was giving aerobics lessons on videos, which were very popular. In 1982 she tried her hand at Broadway as a musical performer with moderate success . She was more successful in the 1990s with the production of Victor / Victoria based on the comedy film of the same name . There were also some television films. From the late 1990s she was also back in the cinema. In 2001 she had a small role in the hit Naturally Blond alongside Reese Witherspoon .

Personal

On May 8, 1959, she married her school friend, James Welch. The marriage, which was divorced again in 1964, has two children. Tahnee Welch also became an actress. From 1967 to 1972, Raquel was married to Patrick Curtis. He was followed by the spouses Andre Weinfeld (1980–1990) and the restorer Richard Palmer (1999–2003).
