Feuerdrache (Original title: Fathom ) is an American agent film with comedic elements from 1967 with Raquel Welch in the lead role. The script was based on a novel in the Fathom series by writer Larry Forrester.

action

A US skydiving team tours Spain. One of the crew members is the attractive Fathom Harvill, who is hired by Campbell, a Scottish agent, to find a lost nuclear missile mechanism. This mechanism is hidden in a statue, a fire dragon.

On her search for the mechanism, Fathom meets the Armenian agent Serapkin and the wealthy Peter Merriwether, who is also looking for the statue. Fathom finds out that the statue was stolen from a museum. Fathom is able to fend off several attacks by Serapkin and ultimately take the statue. She wants to hand her over to Campbell, who goes with her on board an airplane. There she is attacked by Campbell's assistant Webb. Merriwether chases Campbell's machine in a plane and is able to save Fathom and the statue.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes the work as “a rather cheerful mixture of agent and crime film; less concerned with logical connections than with speed and tension ”.

Roger Ebert wrote in his review that the whole concept was falling apart. What is playing a dental technician from California who takes part in a parachute championship in Europe and is recruited by a spy ring. It is not amusing unless you can believe that a pretty girl is really involved in something like that.

Howard Thompson of the New York Times was surprised at how smooth the sleek film was, despite clinging to James Bond. Except for an explosion, it can do without any technical gimmicks. Thompson thought the film was crackling fun and certified Raquel Welch that she had learned to act.

background

The film premiered on August 9, 1967 in the United States. In Germany it came to cinemas just 14 days later.

The film was shot in and around Málaga , Spain. Studio recordings were made at Shepperton Studios in the UK.

After Caprice with Doris Day and Come Spy with Me with Andrea Dromm, the 20th Century Fox production was the third spy film in a year with a woman as a heroine / spy.

Director Martinson and screenwriter Semple were responsible for the comedic Batman television series and the resulting film Batman Keeps the World in Suspense (1966) in the 1960s . Peter Medak worked as an assistant director . For Raquel Welch it was the first leading role in a movie.
