Douglas Slocombe
Douglas Slocombe OBE (born February 10, 1913 in London , † February 22, 2016 there ) was a British cameraman .
Life
Douglas Slocombe began his career as a freelance journalist and photographer . He traveled to the United Kingdom , Poland and the Netherlands as a photo reporter between 1933 and 1939 . He started working as a cameraman during World War II . He worked for British war reporting. After the war he worked as a cameraman for feature films. His work includes more than 80 productions in almost 50 years. Most recently, he worked on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). In the 2000s he could still be seen in some documentaries. Slocombe died in February 2016 at the age of 103 in a London hospital where he was receiving treatment after falling in January 2016. He left a daughter.
Slocombe was one of the great artisans in the camera business. An explicit "Slocombe style" could never be determined in his camera and light management, he adapted his work to the respective film and its needs. Therefore, Slocombe was able to work with different directors over the decades, which gave him a varied filmography.
In the course of his career, he has received three British Academy Film Awards and has been nominated for an Oscar three times . At the 1981 Cannes International Film Festival , Slocombe was a jury member.
