Königsliebe (Original: Saraband for Dead Lovers ) is a British historical film drama from 1948. The film is about the tragic love affair between Princess Sophie Dorothea of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Count Philipp Christoph von Königsmarck .
action
The action begins in Schloss Ahlden . Exiled to the provinces decades ago, Sophie Dorothea ( Joan Greenwood ) remembers her youth at the end of her life. As a princess , she grew up carefree in the ducal castle of Celle , and for political reasons she married her cousin Georg Ludwig ( Peter Bull ), who later became King George I of Great Britain. However, the marriage is extremely unhappy for Sophie Dorothea, and so the neglected Electress begins a love affair with the attractive Count von Königsmarck ( Stewart Granger ). The relationship soon became public and Königsmarck was murdered in the Leineschloss in Hanover by the intrigue of Countess Platen ( Flora Robson ) . Sophie Dorothea is banished to Ahlden Castle, where she dies after being imprisoned for over 30 years.
