Francis Michael Gough (born November 23, 1916 in Kuala Lumpur , † March 17, 2011 in London , England ) was a British actor .

Life

Michael Gough was born to British parents in what is now Malaysia . He began his stage career in 1936, but only appeared in a movie after the Second World War , in Marc Allégret's Technicolor color melodrama Unruhiges Blut (Blanche Fury) from 1947. In the following decade he mainly played historical roles, such as in Anna Karenina or Richard III. Since 1958 he has appeared increasingly in horror films and crime films  - partly in the so-called hammer films  - for which he was particularly suitable because of his large and elegant appearance and his prominent, bushy eyebrows (for example, together with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in Terence Fisher's Dracula ). In addition to first-class roles, he also played in numerous B-movies .

In recent years his roles have been marked by a touch of British elegance and loyalty , such as Lord Delamere in Out of Africa and especially butler Alfred Pennyworth in Batman , Batman Returns , Batman Forever and Batman & Robin .

In 1979, Gough received the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Bedroom Farce . In 1988 he was nominated again for the same award for his performance in Breaking the Code .

Gough was married four times, including to fellow actress Anneke Wills . His son Simon Gough also appeared in some feature films and television films between 1965 and 1973 .
