An Outrageous Affair is a British drama film directed in 1994 by Moira Armstrong . The script is based on a novel by Joanna Trollope , but differs from the original in a few essential points.
action
The wealthy lawyer Martin Jordan marries Alice. The couple has three children. The Jordans move after a while. In the new location, Cecily Jordan, Martin's mother, dominates the family.
Martin finds work with Lady Unwin, whose daughter Clodagh spent some time in New York. He flirts with Clodagh, who visits the Jordans the next day. The visits become more frequent, one of which Clodagh reveals to Alice that she had a mistress in New York.
Alice and Clodagh begin an affair that later goes into crisis.
Reviews
- DykesVision: "... sensitive lesbian Pygmalion story ..."
- Eva's book and film corner: "... visually and narrative beautiful British film ..."
- Coming out of TV criticizes the film's deviation from the book. It had been weakened so as not to hurt the feelings of the mainstream audience with a lesbian happy ending. Anyone who just wants to see a budding romance between two women will be well served with the film. In contrast to the novel, the film does not show a woman's self-discovery.
backgrounds
- The film was shot in Oxfordshire , England .
- Sophie Ward, the leading actress, left her husband two years after the film for a wife. She already had feelings for women while filming, but at the same time as the film was released, she didn't want to come out. That looked too much like cheap advertising, said Ward.
- The film was shown on German television and is only available in Germany as a VHS video in the original English language.
