Jeremy Philip Northam (born December 1, 1961 in Cambridge , England ) is a British actor .

Short biography

Jeremy Northam was born in 1961 to two Cambridge professors. His father is considered an established Ibsen translator. In 1972 the family moved to Bristol . Northam studied English Language and Literature at London University , where he graduated. He gained his first acting experience at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School , later he had great success on London's stages. His breakthrough came when he stepped in for his fellow actor Daniel Day-Lewis as Hamlet. He had his first television roles in Suspicion (1987) and Journey's End (1988). He first attracted attention in a film adaptation of the Emily Brontë classic Stormy Passion ( Wuthering Heights ), where he played alongside Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes .

In 1990 Northam received the Laurence Olivier Award as an outstanding newcomer . In the mid-1990s, he began making films in Los Angeles as well. His Hollywood debut was the role of Jack Devlin in Das Netz with Sandra Bullock . From 2007 he played the character of Thomas More in the award-winning series The Tudors . Northam continues to act in the theater, from February to July 2012 he was seen as Richard Greatham in the London stage version of the play Hay Fever by Noël Coward .
