Life

family

Ralph Fiennes is the eldest son of the photographer and illustrator Mark Fiennes (1933–2004) and the writer Jennifer Lash (1938–1993). From this marriage came Magnus (composer and music producer), the twins Joseph Fiennes (also actor - Shakespeare in Love , Luther ) and Jacob Mark (forester), as well as the daughters Martha Maria (director) and Sophia Victoria (documentary film director). He is the grandson of the industrialist Maurice Fiennes . Michael Emery (archaeologist) (* 1952) grew up with them as a foster brother. The explorer and adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes also belongs to the extensive aristocratic family Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes . Fiennes is nephew of the theology professor Nicholas Lash and great-nephew of the Benedictine Father Dom Sebastian Moore. Fiennes and his siblings lived - due to the father's change of occupation - in different places in England and Ireland and lived in West Cork , among others .

From 1993 to 1997 Ralph Fiennes was married to actress Alex Kingston - they went to drama school together. Between 1995 and 2006, Fiennes was in a relationship with the British actress Francesca Annis , whom he met in a Hamlet production in which she played Hamlet's mother.

Education and career

At a young age his mother noticed his artistic talent, who encouraged him and his siblings intensively. Ralph Fiennes starred in two of his sister's films ( Onegin and Chromophobia ).

After leaving school, Ralph Fiennes began studying fine arts at the Chelsea School of Art , but switched to acting after a year. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , he was hired by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1988 . Since 1987 he has been a member of the Royal National Theater . Fiennes is closely connected to the stage to this day. Even after his international breakthrough, he was seen on stage several times, for example as Shakespeare's Hamlet or in Ibsen's Brand . He is therefore often compared to Laurence Olivier . In spring 2006 he appeared as Frank Hardy in Brian Friel's Faith Healer on the stage of the Gate Theater, Dublin . The successful production moved to Broadway in New York in the summer. In 2011 he played Prospero in Shakespeare's The Tempest at the Theater Royal Haymarket . In 2016 he played the title role in Shakespeare's Richard III in London . at the Almeida Theater , where he had previously played Hamlet (1995), Richard II (2000) and Coriolanus (2010).

The focus of his work, however, is in the film sector. The depiction of the concentration camp commandant Amon Göth in Schindler's list earned him an Oscar nomination, as did the role of Laszlo Almasy in The English Patient . His choice of roles ranges from historical figures such as TE Lawrence and Marcel Proust to film adaptations. B. Michael Ondaatjes The English Patient , Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda , Graham Greenes The End of an Affair , Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin , morally questionable people (or villains) ( quiz show , Red Dragon ) to romantic heroes like in Maid in Manhattan . In 1998 he worked in the remake of Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone on the side of Sean Connery and Uma Thurman . However, the film flopped at the box office. From the fourth part of the film adaptation of the Harry Potter series ( Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ) Ralph Fiennes took on the role of Lord Voldemort , Harry Potter's archenemy.

In addition, Fiennes was also a speaker in numerous audio book productions and voice actor in cartoons such as The Prince of Egypt , The Man of 1000 Miracles or for the stop-motion cartoon Wallace & Gromit - On the hunt for the giant rabbit .

He is socially committed to UNICEF (Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS) , Wildaid and The Constant Gardener Trust .

In 2011 Fiennes received an invitation to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival for Coriolanus , his feature film debut as a director . This is a modern interpretation of the Shakespeare play of the same name . In 2013 he directed his second film, The Invisible Woman .

In 2012, Fiennes played former secret agent Gareth Mallory in the James Bond film Skyfall , who becomes the new " M " as the film progresses . This role played by Fiennes thus takes on the position of Judi Dench's character, which she held in a total of seven Bond films. In 2015 he took on the role again in James Bond 007: Specter and 2020 in James Bond 007: No Time to Die .

Fiennes played the leading role in the film Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), which received the Silver Bear at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival . In 2014, he played the role of Rakitin in a Russian film adaptation of the play A Month in the Country by Ivan Turgenev, directed by Vera Glagoleva .

In 2018 his third directorial work, Nureyev - The White Crow , was published, which is based on a biography of the dancer Rudolf Chametowitsch Nureyev . Fiennes himself took on the role of Alexander Ivanovich Pushkin .

Fiennes, who has played theater since his school days, began his professional career in 1985 at the Open Air Theater in London's Regent's Park with a supporting role in Shakespeare's comedy What You Want .
