action

Marisa Ventura is a single mother of son Ty and works as a maid in a hotel in New York district of Manhattan . With active tutoring from a colleague, she applied for training as a manager. One day she takes her son to the hotel, where a colleague is supposed to take care of him because the boy's father has once again failed to keep an appointment. While she is busy in the suite of the wealthy Caroline Lane, a colleague urges Marisa to put on Lane's classy wardrobe. Meanwhile, Ty meets politician Christopher Marshall in the elevator who wants to go for a walk with his dog. The two talk about Richard Nixon and the lies of the politicians. Ty asks Marshall if he can go with the dog for a walk. Before that, Ty has to ask for his mother's permission and goes with Marshall to the suite , where Marisa is still wearing Caroline Lane's wardrobe. Marshall then thinks Marisa is the owner of the suite and calls her Caroline. He invites them to go for a walk with them too. Marshall is so charmed by her that he wants to invite her to dinner through the butler Lionel. Of course, the real Caroline gets the invitation to the suite where Marshall Marisa had previously met. At dinner, of all people, Marisa and the butler are supposed to serve Lionel. Marisa manages to remain unrecognized by Marshall, and Marshall is completely surprised that he is sitting across from the unknown, real Caroline at dinner.

The desperate Christopher lets search for Marisa and later sees her by chance on the street. He invites her - again through the butler - to an evening gala and she accepts. But since she is applying for a position in management and the affair could endanger her job, she is determined to end the acquaintance there. Instead, she weakens and spends a night with Marshall after the evening gala. Caroline meets Marisa the next day as she is coming out of Marshal's room. Caroline's friend recognizes her as the maid of her suite. The fact that Marisa borrowed her wardrobe also becomes known. The management of the hotel can still prevent Caroline from filing a complaint, but terminates Marisa without notice. Outraged by this, butler Lionel also quits the job.

Marisa finds a job in another hotel where she wants to move up to management after a certain period of time. On his campaign tour back in New York, Marshall gives a press conference in the hotel where Marisa now works. Son Ty goes to Marshall's press conference and asks him if the politician doesn't agree that nobody is perfect and that everyone deserves a second chance even after a mistake . Ty leads Marshall to Marisa - when they meet, they kiss.

At the end of the film, various front pages of magazines are shown, from which one learns that Marshall was elected Senator , is still with Marisa, who eventually also made it to hotel manager.

Quote

Ralph Fiennes on his film Maid in Manhattan :

A man has never congratulated me on that.

criticism

Cinema 3/2003 magazine described the film as " heartwarming ". Film-dienst 5/2003 criticized the “ unoriginal construction ” and criticized the actors as “ not very convincing ”. The Rhein-Zeitung of March 7, 2003 scoffed that the film was suitable for “ pubescent girls ”.

Roger Ebert is milder in his judgment: “ Maid in Manhattan is a skilful, smoothly polished film based on a tried-and-tested pattern that gives life to the charisma of its stars. He's playing with the eternal idiot Plot Syndrome to clear up a little misunderstanding, and there won't be anyone in the audience who doesn't know how it'll end. [The movie] follows the path with a speed and charm that… yes, it was fun ”. “We go to the movies for many reasons, one of which is to watch attractive people fall in love. You don't have to be ashamed of that. It's okay to watch a romantic comedy. [...] But what we expect is that she is not stupid, at least not more stupid than necessary, and that people are involved who embody star qualities ”.
