The Gate Theater (official name: Gate Theater , Irish Amharclann an Gheata ) is a theater in Dublin . It is located in Parnell Square, between the north end of O'Connell Street and the Garden of Remembrance .

The Gate Theater was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál Mac Liammóir to show works by European and American authors. In the early years the Abbey Theaters Peacock rooms were used, later the theater in Dublin moved to Cavendish Row (house number 1). The design of the theater building was carried out by the architect Michael Scott . Actors Orson Welles , James Mason and Michael Gambon began their careers at the Gate Theater.

Since 1983 the theater has been directed by the theater director Michael Colgan . In 2007 the musical Sweeney Todd by the composer Stephen Sondheim was performed in the Gate Theater.
