Garden of Remembrance
The Garden of Remembrance ( Irish : An Gairdín Cuimhneacháin , German: Garden of Memories ) is a as a memorial landscaped garden in the Irish capital Dublin to commemorate "all those who gave their lives for the cause of Irish freedom." It is located in the north fifth of the former Rotunda Gardens in Parnell Square , a Georgian- style plaza near the north end of O'Connell Street and the Gate Theater .
Commemoration
The garden is reminiscent of freedom fighters from various uprisings, including:
- the 1798 rebellion of the Society of United Irishmen
- the 1803 Rebellion by Robert Emmet
- the 1848 Rebellion by the Young Ireland Movement
- of the Fenian Uprising of 1867 by the Fenian Brotherhood
- of the 1916 Easter Rising by the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Civic Army
- of the Irish War of Independence of the IRA
The garden is on the site where the Irish Volunteers were formed in 1913 and where some of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held overnight before being sent to Kilmainham Gaol prison. The Garden of Remembrance was opened in 1966 by Irish President Eamon de Valera on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising - of which he was in command.
The British Queen Elizabeth II visited the garden on May 17, 2011 as part of her historic four-day state visit and laid a wreath there. This was the first visit by a British monarch to Ireland since King George V's in 1911.
design
The garden was designed by Dáithí Hanly. It is provided with a water basin in the shape of a sunken (Christian) cross. The bottom of the pool is decorated with mosaics of blue-green waves and Celtic weapons. This is reminiscent of the old custom of throwing weapons into the water as a sign of the end of hostilities. In addition, a statue of the Lir children by Oisín Kelly, symbolizing rebirth and resurrection, is the focal point of the garden; it was set up in 1971.
