Oisín Kelly
Oisín Kelly (born May 17, 1915 in Dublin as Austin Kelly , † 1981 ) was an Irish sculptor .
He was the son of William Kelly, principal of James's Street National School , and his wife Elizabeth (nee McLean). Before becoming an artist in residence at the Kilkenny Design Center in 1966 , he worked as a teacher. He initially attended evening classes at the National College of Art and Design and studied briefly with Henry Moore in 1948 and 1949 .
Kelly originally focused on small wood carvings , and his first commissions were mostly for Catholic churches. He became famous for a commission for a sculpture, The Children of Lir (German: Die Kinder Lirs ), for the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin. Other public contracts followed, including Two Working Men in front of County Hall in Cork and the statue of James Larkin in Dublin's O'Connell Street .
