Chanodichthys erythropterus ( Syn. Culter erythropterus ) is a predatory carp-like species from Asia. In Hong Kong it is called Bak Uein Cantonese , in China 翘 嘴 红 鲌, in Korea 백조어, in Russia Обыкновенный верхогляд Verchogljad, in English Predatory Carp, Common Skygazer or Redfin Culter.

description

Chanodichthys erythropterus has an elongated and streamlined body, relatively large and well-developed eyes and a long anal fin. The average length is 40 centimeters. In the Amur, the fish can weigh up to 7 kilograms and be over 80 centimeters long. In 2000, a fish weighing 14 kilograms and over a meter in length was caught in a body of water in Liaoning Province, China .

distribution

Chanodichthys erythropterus lives in subtropical to cool temperate rivers and lakes in the People's Republic of China , Hong Kong , North Korea , South Korea , Mongolia , the Russian Federation , Taiwan and northern Vietnam . It is particularly common in the Russian-Chinese border river Amur , in the Yangtze , in the Red River , in the Ussuri , the Korean Han River , Nakdonggang and Kum Rivers, the Chinese Hanka Lake in Manchuria and the Buir Lake in Mongolia.

Way of life

Together with the “lookup” ( Culter alburnus ), which also robs the surface , Chanodichthys erythropterus is one of the typical large predatory fish in the Amur. Juveniles of Chanodichthys erythropterus feed on plants, detritus, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and insects, while adult specimens mainly hunt prey such as smaller species of carp. They stay in the upper water layers and keep an eye on the movements of prey fish close to the surface. During the massive hatching of mayflies , these insects also belong to their prey. Sexual maturity is reached at a length of 40 centimeters and an age of about six years.

Use

Chanodichthys erythropterus is kept in pond farms. It is also important as a fishing fish. In order to preserve the natural gene pool of this species, genetic studies were carried out in the Chanodichthys erythropterus population in the Yangtze River, with polymorphisms of this species being described, among other things.
