Course of the Ussuri |
The Ussuri ( Russian Уссури , Chinese : Wusuli Jiang , 乌苏里江 / 烏蘇里江) is a right tributary of the Amur ( Heilong Jiang ) in Russia and China .
The 897 km long Ussuri rises in the Russian Far East east-northeast of Vladivostok in the south of the Sichote-Alin Mountains (coastal mountains opposite Japan ). Its source is just a few kilometers west of the coast of the Sea of Japan , a marginal sea of the Pacific . From there, its water turns inland mainly in northerly directions. Its headwaters to the confluence with the Arsenyevka River south of Kirowski is also Ulache ( Russian Улахэ ).
After leaving the mountain range, the Sungacha , coming from the south-west, flows into it , as a Russian-Chinese border river that flows from the 4400 km² large Chankasee . From now on the Ussuri is also the border river between Russia and China. The Muling He, coming from the southwest, joins further north . A little below the confluence of the Ussuri and the Amur, which is also on this border, lies the city of Khabarovsk (the capital of the Russian Far East).
The Ussuri and Sungatschi form a navigable stretch of 750 km in summer.
In 1969 there were heavy fighting between the border troops on the Ussuri .
