The Songhua ( Chinese 松花江 , Pinyin Sōnghuā Jiāng , Manchurian Sunggari ula, also known by its Russian name Sungari , Сунгари ) is an approximately 1927 km long river in China ( East Asia ).
It rises in the Changbai Mountains near the Chinese- North Korean border and flows through northeast China - first in a north-west direction and then in a north-east direction. Thus, the water flows on its course through Manchuria, among other things through the metropolis of Harbin . Finally, the Songhua Jiang flows into the Sino-Russian border river Heilong Jiang (Russian Amur ) near Tongjiang , of which it is the most important tributary .
Its longest tributary is the Nen Jiang . The section of the Songhua above the confluence, which, in contrast to the later, west-eastern course of the river, flows from the southeast to the northwest, is also called Di'er ("second") Songhua Jiang .
The Songhua is dammed up into reservoirs in the Baishan Dam and the Fengman Dam .
history
On November 13, 2005 , after a series of explosions in a chemical plant in Jilin, Songhua was contaminated with benzene (carcinogenic) and nitrobenzene . According to official information, around 100 tons of benzene were discharged into the river. Since many cities on Songhua get their drinking water from it, there was a risk of poisoning for the population and the water supply had to be temporarily shut down. The metropolis of Harbin was also affected.
