Rovio , in the alpine Lombard local dialect Roef [ROF] , is a municipality in the county Ceresio , district Lugano , the Swiss canton of Ticino .
geography
The village is 230 meters above Lake Lugano at the foot of Monte Sant'Agata (942 m above sea level), a foothill of Monte Generoso , at around 500 meters above sea level. Neighboring communities on the Swiss side are Arogno , Maroggia , Melano , Castel San Pietro TI and Mendrisio , on the Italian side Alta Valle Intelvi and Centro Valle Intelvi .
history
The place was first attested in 852 ("res illa de Rovi"). It is probably a phytotoponym. Perhaps the name form contains an old plural or a reflex of the locative of the Latin noun rǔbus (Italian rovo ); Rovio would mean "with the blackberries ".
The area was already settled in the Iron and Roman times, which is indicated by various finds. From 1213 it formed its own neighborhood (vicenza), which was subordinate to the Pieve Riva San Vitale . In 1517 Rovio came to the Lugano Bailiwick . In 1798 it joined the short-lived Repubblica di Riva San Vitale .
