About this picture
w

Arogno is a municipality in the Ceresio district , in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The place lies at the foot of the mountain Sighignola , whose mountain top lies in Italian territory. Below the municipality, Arogno borders the Italian municipality and exclave Campione d'Italia on the shores of Lake Lugano .

Other neighboring communities are also Bissone , Maroggia and Rovio in Switzerland and Alta Valle Intelvi in Italy.

history

Due to its strategic location on the transit axis between the jurisdiction of Seprio and Isola Comacina , Arogno was developed into an important fortified garrison during the Lombard era. In 859 the Milanese monastery of Sant'Ambrogio is mentioned as the owner of goods.

At the end of 1797 a dispute arose between Arogno and the Italian enclave Campione over the territorial boundaries and did not end until October 5, 1861, after long negotiations between the Swiss, Lombard and Italian authorities through an amicable agreement. On February 24, 1798, Arogno joined the then proclaimed republic of the Pieve di Riva San Vitale near Arogno. The parish church of Santo Stefano (originally San Nicolao, mentioned in 810) separated from Riva San Vitale on March 5, 1581 and formed an independent parish.
