geography
The village is located at 276 m above sea level. M. on the shore of the southern arm of Lake Lugano , opposite and 1.5 km southeast of the Melide station of the Swiss Federal Railways and is connected to this village by the dam of the same name . The lovely village is located directly on the lake and is now cut off from the “hinterland” by the A2 motorway and the Lugano - Chiasso section of the Swiss Federal Railways. Hauptstrasse 2 leads through the village itself .
Neighboring communities are Arogno , Maroggia , Melide and the Italian exclave Campione d'Italia .
history
The village was mentioned as Blixuni in 735 and 854 ; In the 10th century the monastery of San Salvatore near Pavia owned goods there, as did the monastery of Sant'Ambrogio of Milan. In the second half of the 15th century, it was a center of Ghibelline resistance. In the Middle Ages there was a castle on the site of today's Casa Tencalla (mentioned in 1054, documented in 1439 and 1504).
After November 15, 1798, the Patriots and the Cisalpines set up their headquarters here, fortified it and from where they made their raids into the neighborhood. On February 23, Bissone entered the republic of the Pieve Riva San Vitale ; on March 3rd it was attacked by the Lugans; these drove the defenders out of it and captured five cannons and two flags and took about thirty prisoners. In 1803 Bissone was annexed to the county of Ceresio after it had previously belonged provisionally to the county of Morcote.

traffic
More than 50,000 cars drive through the municipality on the motorway every day . There are also 200 trains and the traffic on the cantonal road. The authorities are currently planning a soundproofing wall costing 70 million Swiss francs. However, since they are not expected to provide sufficient protection, there has been great opposition to the plans among the population. As an alternative, a project by the architect David Core is being discussed, who proposes covering the two streets and the railway line and using the space gained for apartment buildings with a view of the lake.
Attractions
The village image is classified in the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) as a site of national importance in Switzerland. The old village center - it is part of the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) - is dominated by an impressive village square and has its character from old palazzi with typical arcades. Also worth mentioning are the churches of San Rocco (17th century) and especially San Carpoforo (built in the Middle Ages, baroque in 1630).
