The artificial dam that bridges the narrow lake of Lake Lugano between Melide and Bissone in the Swiss canton of Ticino is called the Melide dam ( Ponte di Melide or Ponte Diga ) .

The dam was built in 1848 according to plans by Pasquale Lucchini and is of national importance. Here the main road 2 , the national road A2 and the Gotthard railway cross Lake Lugano. The dam forms the direct connection between the two cities of Lugano and Chiasso within Switzerland . It is used by over 55,000 road vehicles every day (year 2000).

On the western side of the dam, directly on the national road and the railway line, is the Swissminiatur tourist offer , an open-air facility that represents miniaturized Switzerland.
