Pasquale Lucchini (born April 7, 1798 in Arasio near Montagnola , † February 23, 1892 in Lugano ) was a Swiss engineer and politician . He sat from 1839 to 1844 and from 1855 to 1859 for the radicals in the Ticino Grand Council .

Life

Pasquale Lucchini was the son of the carpenter Stefano Lucchini. After a short school education he was trained as a bricklayer and from 1821 worked as a site foreman in the construction of the road over the Stilfser Joch . He then received various assignments in road construction and was employed, among other things, as head of work in the Valtellina and on the Splügen Pass . Over time, he continued his self-taught on to the engineer.

One of his first jobs as a civil engineer in Ticino was the construction of the road tunnel in the Stalvedro gorge in the Leventina and, above all, the construction of the Melide dam over Lake Lugano from 1841 to 1847, which made the Gotthard route passable throughout.

From 1844 to 1855 he worked as a cantonal engineer, among other things, building the bridge over the Tresa and the road into the Onsernone valley ; he also made some important studies on the alpine railway. In 1863 he was entrusted with the project of the Quais of Lugano; he also designed the first projects for the melioration of the Magadino plain .

Together with Carlo Cattaneo , he was the first to show that it was technically possible to pierce the Gotthard by rail and in several publications between 1852 and 1870 he presented the advantages of this route. He also developed the idea of ​​the spiral tunnel and, together with Giovanni Battista Pioda , Carlo Cattaneo and Carlo Battaglini, was one of the most important Ticino champions of the Gotthard Railway .

His suggestions made it clear that he studied problem solving intensively and adapted it to a continued maturation process with new considerations, while also taking technical progress into account.

In addition to his job as an engineer, he also worked in the silk industry , and in 1854, after retiring from the civil service, opened a spinning mill in Lugano, which continued to grow over time until it assumed an industrial format.

As Canton engineer, he took a deputy in rank lieutenant colonel of genius Corps with the Ticino troops under Giacomo Luvini on Sonderbundskrieg part 1847th In 1873 he was one of the founders of the Banca della Svizzera italiana .

Pasquale Lucchini was first married to Battistina Donini and secondly to Marianna Rusca, widow of Domenico Lucchini. His grave is in the cemetery opposite the church of Sant'Abbondio in Collina d'Oro .

Honors

  • In Collina d'Oro the street Via dei Lucchini and in Lugano the Via Pasquale Lucchini were named after Pasquale Lucchini.
  • In Bissone a simple memorial was erected in his memory east of the Melide dam; it was created by the architects Aldo Lucchini (1914–1975) and Raoul Casella, both from Lugano and descendants of Pasquale Lucchini.
