The BSI SA is the oldest bank in the canton of Ticino . The banking institute, founded in Lugano in 1873 as Banca della Svizzera Italiana , was bought by the Brazilian group BTG Pactual for 1.7 billion dollars in 2014. Its dissolution was ordered in May 2016.
BSI concentrated its business activities on private banking and asset management . As an international bank, BSI SA is represented with a network of 31 branches and subsidiaries in Europe, the Far East as well as Central and South America. At the end of 2014, the company employed 1928 people and managed assets of around 91 billion Swiss francs.
history
- 1873 Founding of the Banca della Svizzera Italiana.
- 1881 Until 1907 the only bank in Ticino that was allowed to issue banknotes.
- 1935: The bank opens a branch in Zurich and has a Swiss stock exchange headquarters.
- 1969: Start of international expansion.
- 1973: 100th anniversary. Opening of the St. Moritz branch.
- 1975: Extension of the sphere of activity to French-speaking Switzerland.
- 1976: Opening of the first South American agency in Caracas, Venezuela.
- 1981: Representation in Hong Kong opened.
- 1988: Expansion of business activities to the Principality of Monaco.
- 1998: Assicurazioni Generali in Trieste becomes the sole shareholder of BSI.
- 2000: Banca della Svizzera Italiana is renamed BSI AG on January 1st. Opening of the branch in Lausanne.
- 2005: BSI Bank Ltd opened in Singapore.
- 2006: Takeover of Banca Unione di Credito .
- 2008: Takeover of Banca del Gottardo and opening of an agency in Bahrain.
- 2011: Expansion of BSI in Asia and receipt of the banking license to open a branch in Hong Kong.
- 2013: Expansion of BSI in Italy and receipt of the banking license for the opening of BSI EUROPE - Italian branch in Milan.
- 2014: Opening of the branch in Panama
- 2015: Opening of the branch in Como. On September 15, BSI officially becomes a subsidiary of BTG Pactual.
- 2016: Due to a violation of money laundering regulations, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority Finma orders the liquidation of the bank and confiscates “unjustified profit” of 95 million francs; the federal prosecutor's office opens criminal proceedings; The closure is ordered through the Singapore branch. The company has been integrated into the Zurich private bank EFG .
