BSI in Lugano

The BSI SA is the oldest bank in the canton of Ticino . The banking institute, founded in Lugano in 1873 as Banca della Svizzera Italiana , was bought by the Brazilian group BTG Pactual for 1.7 billion dollars in 2014. Its dissolution was ordered in May 2016.

BSI concentrated its business activities on private banking and asset management . As an international bank, BSI SA is represented with a network of 31 branches and subsidiaries in Europe, the Far East as well as Central and South America. At the end of 2014, the company employed 1928 people and managed assets of around 91 billion Swiss francs.

  • 1873 Founding of the Banca della Svizzera Italiana.

  • 2016: Due to a violation of money laundering regulations, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority Finma orders the liquidation of the bank and confiscates “unjustified profit” of 95 million francs; the federal prosecutor's office opens criminal proceedings; The closure is ordered through the Singapore branch. The company has been integrated into the Zurich private bank EFG .
