Swissminiatur is an open-air facility opened in 1959 in Melide in the canton of Ticino and shows a scaled-down Switzerland .

Description and location

In the Swissminiatur, over 130 models of patrician houses , churches , castles , monuments and other interesting buildings in Switzerland can be admired on 14,000 m² from March to November on a 1:25 scale . The exhibition is constantly being expanded and changed slightly. In addition, 18 trains move on around 3.5 kilometers of rails , as well as some cogwheel , wire rope and suspension railways as well as model ships . Surrounded by 15,000 species of flowers and over 1,500 trees, Switzerland can be explored in fast motion. In addition to a play park for children, visitors will also find a self-service restaurant and a souvenir shop. Every year, Swissminiatur is visited by around 200,000 people.

In 2003, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the canton of Ticino in the Swiss Confederation, an accessible model of the Milan Cathedral was included in the exhibition. It is the only non-Swiss object at Swissminiatur and is intended to commemorate the earlier connection between Ticino and the Duchy of Milan .

Swissminiatur can be easily reached in various ways. The park is located on both the Gotthard line and the A2 motorway , around 5 km south of Lugano on the Melide dam .
