Depiction of the Gemsstock by August Wilhelm Grube (1874) |
The Gemsstock is 2961 m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Chastelhorn- Pizzo-Centrale chain of the Gotthard Group in the Swiss canton of Uri .
location
The Gemsstock is located south of Andermatt or the Urserental between the Unteralp in the east and the Gamsboden leading to the Gotthard Pass in the west. 1.3 kilometers southwest of the summit is the Chastelhorn ( 2973 m above sea level ) and 2.7 kilometers south of the Pizzo Centrale ( 2999 m above sea level ).
The Gurschenfirn (a small glacier ) stretches north of the main and secondary peaks ( 2954 m above sea level ), to the southwest, on the northern flank of the Chastelhorn of the Sankt Annafirn , in the south of the Schwarzwasserfirn . In order to protect the Gurschenfirn against melting too quickly , it has been covered with foil in summer for several years.
There are several mountain lakes on the north and east flanks, including the Luterseeli ( 2281 m above sea level ).
According to the SOIUSA classification , the mountain belongs to section 10, the Lepontine Alps .
Cable car and mountain sports
From Andermatt ( 1,437 m above sea level ) a cable car leads to the Gemsstock. The cable car is divided into two sections; The middle station is located on the Gurschenalp ( 2212 m above sea level ).
The Gemsstock, together with the Nätschen, is part of the Skiarena Andermatt-Sedrun ski area northeast of Andermatt . In addition to the cable car, there is also a chair lift and a ski lift at the middle station. From the Gemsstock there are numerous opportunities for freeride descents away from the slopes. One descent from the Gemsstock is named after the Andermatt ski racer Bernhard Russi .
Outside the winter season, the cable car operates in midsummer and during the autumn holidays. From the top of the mountain there are only alpine hiking routes . Paths lead to the Vermigelhütte ( 2042 m above sea level ) in the Unteralp and via Gafallenlücke, Gloggentürmli and Lago della Sella to the Gotthard Pass.
