The Lago della Sella is a reservoir in the canton of Ticino in the municipality of Airolo .
location
The reservoir can be reached via the Gotthard Pass . From the Ospizio a small mountain road leads about 2.5 km to the dam.
It is located to the east at the foot of Monte Prosa.
history
The dam was planned by the Swiss engineer Fritz Gigax and built from 1945 to 1947. It is a gravity dam with a height of 36 meters and a crown length of 334 meters. The capacity is 9.2 million cubic meters. The water from the reservoir is used together with that from the Lucendro reservoir in the Airolo power plant. The plant is now operated by the Alpiq energy group .
