The Lucendro power plant ( Italian Impianto idroelettrico Lucendro ), sometimes also called Airolo power plant after the location of the main headquarters , is a storage power plant in the Gotthard region . which lies in the territory of the municipality of Airolo in the canton of Ticino .

history

The Atel received in 1942 by the cantons of Uri and Ticino the concession to use the waters in the St. Gotthard Pass. The first license expired on December 31, 1984 and was extended to December 31, 2024. The canton of Ticino and the canton of Uri have decided to declare a reversal. A cantonal law obliges the canton of Ticino to assert a reversal and to operate the power plant itself when each water right license expires. This is also the reason why Alpiq Holding sold the subsidiary Alpiq Hydro Ticino AG to Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET) in 2015 .

investment

The power plant operated by Alpiq Hydro Ticino SA was built between 1942 and 1948 and partially started operation in 1945. At first, the power plant only ran from January 29 to April 13, 1945, then from January 3 to April 13, 1946 and in the winter of 1946/47, before it went into permanent operation. The final invoice of March 31, 1949 showed a total of 65,200,000 Swiss francs for the preparation. 55% of electricity production belongs to the Canton of Uri and 45% to the Canton of Ticino.

The plant uses this with the reservoirs Lucendro , north of the Gotthard pass in the catchment area of the Reuss , and Sella in the catchment area of the Ticino . The entire catchment area of the two lakes is 23.3 square kilometers.

The water from the Lucendro reservoir is fed through a 4.8 km long inlet tunnel to a 1.9 km long pressure pipeline, which supplies the Lucendro headquarters in Airolo with water with a 996 meter gradient. In the machine house planned by Ticino architects Carlo Tami and Rino Tami , two Pelton turbines drive two electric generators with an installed output of 29  MW each . Around 100  GWh of electricity are generated annually .

The Sella reservoir is connected to the Sella headquarters via a 1 km long pressure line, which releases the water into the inlet tunnel from the Lucendro reservoir. In this small power station, which was built between 1990 and 1991, the water is used by a Francis turbine that drives a 2 MW generator.

The Tremola pumping station pumps water from Lago dei Morti and from a water intake on the Sella into the inlet tunnel. Two pumps with an output of 470 kW each are installed.
