Saubach and Niedgesbach near Schmitten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saubach and Niedgesbach bei Schmitten is a nature reserve in Schmitten in the Hochtaunus district .

The nature reserve

The nature reserve with a size of 58 hectares was placed under protection in 1995.

It includes the forest meadow valleys of the Saubach and Niedgesbach between Seelenberg and Finsternthal to the west of Schmitten .

The inclusion of the area as a nature reserve was not without controversy. Similar to the Reifenberger meadows , only pasture farming was possible in these valleys due to the altitude. After the Second World War , the automation of agriculture made cultivation of these areas uneconomical. They were left to their own devices and developed a variety of plants worth protecting. However, they are still cultural landscapes that would disappear without human intervention. Without human intervention, the meadows would become overgrown and turn into a forest over time.

Section 3, Item 18 of the Ordinance of November 30, 1995 prohibited grazing animals. According to the concerns of residents and farmers of the affected communities, this would destroy the nature of the area, which is worthy of protection. Despite the efforts of Brigitte Kölsch , CDU member of parliament , it was designated as a nature reserve.
