The Reifenberger Wiesen are a nature reserve between Oberreifenberg and Niederreifenberg in the Hochtaunus district .

location

The Reifenberger meadows are located on the northern slope of the Großer Feldberg . On the mountain side, they are limited by the Limes Road. To the west, state road 3025 or its extension at the edge of the forest forms the border of the area. On the valley side, the area is bounded by the building boundary, in particular the former Oberreifenberg educational and family center (BFO). There is also the so-called "Heimliche Wiese", which is used as a ski slope in winter. The Oberreifenberg youth hostel and the Weilquelle nature park hotel are on the edge of the area . The Reifenberger meadows are traversed by the Weil , which rises a few hundred meters above, near the Kleiner Feldberg fort .

description

The 23.37 hectare area with a clear slope at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level was placed under nature protection in 1983. These are rough meadows that were historically created through pasture farming. The inhabitants of the extremely poor Feldberg villages cleared the few areas where agriculture was possible. Due to the altitude and the slope, only pasture farming was possible in the area of the Reifenberger meadows. After the Second World War , the automation of agriculture made cultivation of these areas uneconomical. They were left to their own devices and developed a variety of plants worth protecting. However, they are still cultural landscapes that would disappear without human intervention. Without human intervention, the meadows would become overgrown and turn into a forest over time. At the beginning of 2012, the last clearing of a sub-area of 10 hectares took place in order to combat this effect.

The nature reserve is overgrown by plants such as the Turkish lily , flutter grass and stendellus , which specialize in poor soils and is used as a breeding and retreat area for birds and animals. The very rare lancet-leaved bellflower , which can only be found in the Palatinate and the high Taunus, has its main distribution area in the Taunus in and around the Reifenberger meadows.
