Karl Peter Buttler

Karl Peter Buttler (born October 26, 1942 in Frankfurt am Main ; † December 23, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main) was a German botanist , ecologist , systematist and especially an expert in the field of orchids . From Karl Peter Buttler come a. a. the first descriptions of the two orchid species Ophrys aymoninii and Ophrys holoserica subsp. apulica as well as from Draba dolomitica and Viola wittrockiana . Its author 's abbreviation is Butler .

Life

Karl Peter Buttler studied biology , from 1961 to 1963 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and then at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1967 he received his doctorate in Munich in the group of Hermann Merxmüller with a study on "Cytotaxonomic examinations of Central and Southern European Draba species". Then he was u. a. until 1978 employed as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Systematic Botany at the University of Munich. In the following years he worked as a freelance botanist and non-fiction author in Frankfurt am Main and Offenbach am Main until shortly before his death in 2018 .

Buttler collected numerous plants as evidence for various herbaria ; The Frankfurt herbarium of the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung alone shows 32,000 of its herbarium specimens, mainly from the Mediterranean, Germany (with a focus on Hesse) and Scandinavia (as of December 2018). He was also in collaboration with Michael Thieme lead author of Flore list of Germany , a survey freely available on the Internet through the totality of all occurring in Germany vascular plants - species . The nomenclature of this “standard list” has been changed. a. the standard work Rothmaler: Exkursionsflora von Deutschland is based.

Buttler is the main author of the updated “List of Vascular Plants in Germany”, which was published in December 2018 in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).

Together with other botanists, he co-authored the third and fourth versions of the Red List of Fern and Seed Plants in Hesse in 1997 and 2008 and was responsible for their list of flora.
