The garden pansies ( Viola wittrockiana ) are flowering plants of the genus violets ( Viola ) in the family of the violet plants (Violaceae). They emerged as cultural forms from numerous crossings of several species of the genus and Auslese.

description

Garden pansies are typically biennial plants that are only green in the first year and bloom and fade in the second year. If sown in good time (until July) they will bloom profusely in the first year. Under favorable conditions, they can also grow as perennial plants, but after two years they are no longer of horticultural interest, as they become somewhat shapeless to unsightly after a few years in growth. The plant grows to a height of about 20 cm. The flowering period is from April to October. The flowers are 4 to 6 cm in size. There are five petals .

Multiplication and variety of forms

Garden pansies are sown (in winter for a spring and summer bloom or in summer for an autumn and spring bloom).

Today there is a large selection of cultivated forms that not only include all colors, but also a wide variety of shapes and shades. Several flower colors on one flower or plant are also not uncommon, although the choice of colors for home-grown plants is much greater than for the (smaller) selection in stores. The characteristic black eye has also been bred out of many varieties.

Systematics

The Swedish botanist Veit Brecher Wittrock described the plant in 1896, but did not give it a species name because it was a hybrid form of crosses. The first description under the name Viola wittrockiana by the Austrian botanist Helmut Gams was published in 1925. However, due to deficiencies in content, this was not a valid initial description ; there was no scientifically correct documentation. This was made up in 2007 by the biologist Johannes D. Nauenburg from the Botanical Garden of the University of Rostock in collaboration with his colleague Karl Peter Buttler from Frankfurt am Main and published in the magazine Kochia . Now the pansy is correctly called Viola wittrockiana Gams ex Nauenburg & Buttler . The garden pansies are hybrids with the participation of the species Vosges pansy ( Viola lutea ), Viola tricolor and Altai pansy ( Viola altaica ). The hybrid formula last presented and accepted is: Viola lutea subsp. sudetica × tricolor × altaica (WERNER in JÄGER & WERNER 2001 “2002”: 242)
