Veit Brecher Wittrock (born May 5, 1839 in Skogsbol, Holms socken in Dalsland , † September 1, 1914 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish botanist with German roots. His family had immigrated to Sweden from Holstein. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wittr. "

Life

Wittrock was the son of the ensign and later estate manager Johan Magnus Wittrock (1799-1885) and his wife Ingrid (née Dahlin). He attended school in Vanersborg, in 1855 his studies in botany and zoology began at the University of Uppsala where he in 1866 to Dr. phil. PhD. In the same year he became a part-time lecturer. In his main occupation he taught from 1865 to 1878 at a high school in Uppsala. In 1878 he became an associate professor, and shortly afterwards he was appointed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to temporarily head the curatorial service of the botanical department of the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm because Nils Johan Andersson was ill. In 1879 he became director of Bergianska trädgården (he had the new site laid out in the Norra Djurgården district in 1885 ) and also taught at Stockholm University.

As a member of parliament for Stockholm, Wittrock was a member of the second chamber of the Swedish Reichstag from 1888 to 1890 .

He was an algae researcher and wrote a work on the garden pansy ( Viola × wittrockiana Gams ). In 1907 he wrote a treatise on Linnaea borealis L. En mångformig art. ( Acta Horti Bergiani Volume 4, No. 7).

Wittrock was married to Kristina Sofia Charlotta (nee Danielsson) since 1875.

Honors

In 1887 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1906 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

The plant genus Wittrockia Lindm is named after him . from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) and the algae genus Wittrockiella Wille . The species Entocladia wittrockii (Wille) Burrows 1991 is also named after him.
