The power plant arms is a high pressure - Laufwasserkraftwerk in the municipality of arms , that the energy of the Reuss between Göschenen and the Pfaffensprung uses and both traction power with a frequency of 16.7 Hz, as well as a 50 Hz power generated for feeding into the national grid. The plant is operated by Kraftwerk Wassen AG , 90% of which is owned by SBB and 10% by Canton Uri . The power plant generates an average of 282 GWh of electricity per year, which is mainly used to supply SBB with energy.

The system uses the gradient between Göschenen and the Pfaffensprung reservoir, which is used to catch the water for the Amsteg power station , resulting in a height of fall of 281 m. The power plant can process a maximum of 21 m 3 / s with two Francis turbines and generate a total of 54 MW from it.

Turbine 1 is from Ateliers des Charmilles SA in Geneva . It drives a BBC generator with an output of 30 MVA, which is used to generate 50 Hz electricity. The generator from 1948 is still in operation, only the stator winding was replaced in 1980.

Turbine 2 is from Ateliers de constructions mécaniques de Vevey (ACMV). It drives a Siemens generator with an output of 35 MVA, which generates 17 Hz traction current with a maximum output of 28 MW. This machine set was only installed in 1993 and replaced the three-phase group that was originally installed.

history

The construction of the power plant was awarded by the SBB to Elektro-Watt , which placed the first orders in 1946. The first electricity was generated in 1949. From the start of operations until 1987, SBB leased the power plant to Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke (CKW), which held a 40% stake in the power plant. The system initially only generated 50 Hz electricity for the national grid. It was not until 1990 that machine set 2 was replaced by a traction current machine set that went into operation in 1993. On January 1, 2015, SBB took over the block of shares in CKW, which means that the power plant will henceforth mainly be used to supply SBB with energy.
