700 years of the Swiss Confederation
The anniversary celebration of 700 years of the Swiss Confederation took place in 1991 on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the federal letter of 1291 of the Uri , Schwyz and Nidwalden valleys , which is referred to as the founding document of the old Swiss Confederation .
The original concept for a state exhibition CH91 around Lake Lucerne failed in a referendum in 1987. As an alternative, the federal government decided in 1989 to implement a concept with decentralized celebrations in all parts of the country. Part of these celebrations was also the play of myths on an open-air stage in Schwyz . The national research exhibition “ Heureka ” was also held in Zurich .
The “ Swiss Path ” was laid out for the celebration , a 35-kilometer hiking trail designed by all of the Swiss cantons . The celebrations brought in a positive balance of around 2.3 million Swiss francs .
As part of the celebration, the federal government set up a promotion fund to facilitate access to Swiss skills and knowledge from non- OECD countries .
The first federal youth session was one of the festivities .
