Bottmingen Castle
Bottmingen Castle is a moated castle in the municipality of Bottmingen , south of Basel . The castle from the 13th century is one of the few preserved moated castles in Switzerland . It was first mentioned in 1363 as the property of the chamberlain, an episcopal noble family who is believed to be the builder.
Despite the baroque style , the medieval character can mainly be recognized by the floor plan. In contrast to the moated Hallwyl or Hagenwil castles , the castle lacks a keep . This results in a relationship to the Burgundian-Savoyard type of castle with a tower-reinforced square. In 1720, Johannes Deucher transformed Bottmingen Castle into a country residence of the French early baroque, which was almost completely preserved. In addition to the exterior architecture, the staircase also testifies to this architectural style. Under Martin Wenk , Rococo prevailed in 1780 , which can be seen on the precious stucco in the stone hall. Wenk also had the southeast corner removed down to the courtyard level. Today it serves as a garden terrace.
Today the Bottmingen Castle is used as a restaurant and for banquets, weddings and other festive occasions.
