Madeln ruins

The ruins of Madeln are the ruins of a hilltop castle near Pratteln .

history

The castle was probably built in 1270 by the Eptingians on the highest point of the Adlerberg, an elevation between Frenkendorf and Pratteln. To do this, they built a large fortification with a double wall and moat. On this surface the Eptinger placed a palace on.

The last owner was probably knight Werner von Eptingen-Madeln, whose castle was destroyed during the great Basel earthquake in 1356. In contrast to the neighboring Pratteln Castle , which was rebuilt by the Eptingians, Madeln Castle was left to nature. While there were four floors left of the palace in the 16th century, only a few traces were found in the 18th century. In 1939 soldiers found two wall sections of the ruin while working on the Adler Süd artillery observation bunker. Large parts of the ruin were then uncovered until 1940, and numerous objects were found, for example two well-preserved pot helmets . In 1943 the ruins were filled in again with earth to keep them from falling into disrepair.

The girl hunter

The legend of the Madlenjäger represents a variant of the wild hunt and was interpreted as a harbinger of storm weather. According to the legend, the knight from Madlen killed the man from the Schauenburg to steal his wife. As a punishment, he must now continue to hunt with his white hunting dog in the forest of the Eagle Mountain.
