The Altenberg ruins are the ruins of a hillside castle in the Swiss municipality of Füllinsdorf in the canton of Basel-Landschaft . It is located on the Büechlihau ridge, a steep hill in the forest.

history

There is no documentary mention of the castle and the origin of the property of the Schönthal monastery , which was documented in Füllinsdorf in 1226, is unknown. Normally, monastery property suggests former aristocratic property that established a foundation.

Archaeological finds ensure that the castle was built in the 11th century , shortly after the year 1000. The castle burned down around 1050, was restored, but abandoned shortly before 1100 and partially demolished. In the late Middle Ages, their lands belonged to the Lords of Schauenburg , whose original ancestral seat they may have been. Their task at the end of the 11th century could be related to the deaths of Rudolf von Rheinfelder in 1080 and his son Berthold von Rheinfelden in 1090, which led to upheavals in the region.

The whole complex is elongated and consisted of a main building with the considerable dimensions 8 × 15 meters, to which a circular wall connected. A surrounding wall is set further into the slope and enclosed a larger forecourt. The castle was secured on both transverse sides by approach obstacles, to the northwest by a distinctive neck ditch , to the southeast by a section ditch with a wall in front.

Excavations took place at the castle between 1982 and 1987; the finds date from the 11th century. On this occasion, the wall remains of the castle ruins were preserved , which was made available to the public 1987th
