history

Garden parterre of Ebenrain Castle designed by Édouard André, steel engraving, published 1879

Ebenrain Castle was built in 1774/76 for the Basel silk ribbon manufacturer and dealer Martin Bachofen according to plans by the Basel baroque architect Samuel Werenfels . The associated late baroque gardens north and south of the building were designed by the Bernese architect Niklaus Sprüngli . Before 1805 - with the exception of an avenue of lime trees in the central axis that has survived to this day - the southern garden was converted into a landscape garden of the late style phase, and between 1817 and 1821 also the northern part of the garden. After 1872, the palace was rebuilt, redesigned and the park expanded according to plans by the Parisian garden architect Édouard André . At the beginning of the 20th century a “re-baroque” took place, between 1934 and 1942 extensive renovation by the owner Rudolf Staechelin . The castle complex has been owned by the Canton of Basel-Landschaft since 1951 and is used for art exhibitions, concerts and lectures. From 1986 to 1989 the castle was renovated again.
